Today is Monday, August 7, the 219th day of 2017 in the Gregorian calendar, with 146 days remaining. This is the 200th day of Donald Trump's presidency. There are 1,262 days remaining in his term, assuming he doesn't resign or is otherwise removed from office.

Today marks the approximate midpoint of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

On this day in 1944, IBM dedicated the first program-controlled calculator, the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator (known best as the Harvard Mark I). It used 765,000 electromechanical components and hundreds of miles of wire, comprising a volume of 51 feet in length, eight feet in height, and two feet deep. It weighed about ten thousand pounds. The basic calculating units had to be synchronized and powered mechanically, so they were run by a 50-foot shaft driven by a five horsepower (3.7 kW) electric motor, which served as the main power source and system clock.

Among other things, today is also National Sea Serpent Day.
