- 1613 - Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London, England, went up in flames during a performance of Henry VIII. A theatrical cannon, set off during the performance, misfired, igniting the wooden beams and thatching. According to one of the few surviving documents of the event, no one was hurt except a man whose burning breeches were put out with a bottle of ale. It was rebuilt in the following year
- 1863 - After the National Banking and Currency Act was passed by Congress and signed into law in 1863, First National Bank in Davenport was the first bank in the country to open under its provisions. It was the first First National Bank
- 1927 - The Bird of Paradise, a U.S. Army Air Corps Fokker tri-motor, completed the first transpacific flight, from the mainland United States to Hawaii
- 1956 - The Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 is signed by U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, officially creating the United States Interstate Highway System
- 1975 - Steve Wozniak tested his first prototype of the Apple I computer
- 2007 – Apple Inc. releases its first mobile phone, the iPhone
