On this date in 1957, the Soviets launched Sputnik, the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth. Things got kinda crazy after that and, 12 years later, Americans successfully landed men on the moon.

Deputies arrested a Florida man for possession of a dairy crate. They're really strict in Polk County.

-----

Some people born on October 4 who said some interesting things: Mike Mullen, Susan Sarandon, Roy Blount, Jr., Anne Rice, Jackie Collins, Alvin Toffler, Charlton Heston, Brendan Gill, Buster Keaton, and Damon Runyon.

Based on analogue years with similar summer weather and Pacific Ocean patterns, Accuweather is predicting a "real Western Pennsylvania winter" in the Pittsburgh area. A warmer than average December will be followed by colder than average January, with precipitation above normal. The Old Farmer's Almanac says above average temps and below average precipitation; the competing Farmer's Almanac says just the opposite. I suggest flipping a coin.

No need to worry about all those evil clown sightings. It happens every few years, dating back to 1981.

"The economic revolution of 1870 to 1970 was unique in human history, unrepeatable because so many of its achievements could happen only once." Or, perhaps, adding machine intelligence to everyday objects will be "hundreds of times more disruptive to our lives than the transformations gained by industrialization." You decide.

Star Trek Beyond is available for digital download today. It's the best of the Kelvin timeline, J.J. Abrams produced movies. Which, frankly, isn't saying much.

"Is Trump a product of local TV news? I was struck and saw, for the first time, how disconnected the world that Donald Trump was describing seemed from reality in America—not just on the coasts, but everywhere. It got me thinking about his comments in the past regarding minority communities, crime, and social breakdown as a whole. Those don't reflect the America you'd read in the mainstream media, hear on public radio, or see on network news broadcasts, but they do sound vaguely like one non-partisan news source that I'm familiar with: the local TV news." Where the motto is, "if it bleeds, it leads."

Also from The Atlantic: A handy cheat sheet of Trump's many scandals. "The breadth of Trump’s controversies is truly yuge, ranging from allegations of mafia ties to unscrupulous business dealings, and from racial discrimination to alleged marital rape. They stretch over more than four decades, from the mid- 1970s to the present day."
