Republican Idiocracy

"Part of the appeal of a Herschel Walker, or a Donald Trump, or any number of egregious assholes that Republicans have backed is, in their mind, the worse a candidate is, the more it says to Democrats, 'Do you see how much we don't like what you're selling?' All that socialism, and identity politics, and victimhood, and oversensitivity, and cancel culture, and white self-loathing, and forcing complicated ideas about race and sex on kids too young to understand; literally, anything would be better than that.

"That's their view. That's why you can be a really bad dude in Republican politics... and it's not a deal breaker. Judge Roy Moore was in his thirties when he was still going to the mall and picking up teenage girls. Eric Greitens was Missouri governor and then this year a Senate candidate despite the fact that his ex-wife said that he beat her. And the kids. And he was charged with tying up a woman he was having an affair with, taking nude pictures and threatening to blackmail her with them. I mean, Andrew Cuomo was creepy but there was no begging to be untied. Al Franken took a gag picture but he didn't go Phil Spector on anybody.

"This is a clear difference between the parties. Democrats also think the other side is an existential threat, but their response is not to nominate sickos to make a point. If it was, they'd have a guy to fit the bill: [photo of former Congressman Anthony Weiner taking a semi-nude selfie]. But they don't nominate him because that would just be trolling..."

Watch the entire video. Maher concludes by explaining why Republicans have no problem running candidates with serious moral or ethical issues. And the scary thing is, it makes some degree of sense.

They're not the counter-culture; they're the culture.

(Bill Maher, "New Rules," October 21, 2011.)

Republicans have to stop calling the Wall Street protestors "hippies."

Yes, they're peeing outdoors and having sex in sleeping bags- or, as Bristol Palin calls it, "dating"- but they're not hippies.

The hippies are all gone. Woodstock was 42 years ago. Forget the brown acid. The people who were at Woodstock are now taking the blue Viagra. "Tune in, turn on, drop out" refers to their hearing aids. Wavy Gravy is 75 years old. He's making wavy gravy in his pants...

Of course conservatives want to make this about hippies, because they like to live in the past. Rush Limbaugh- who really is too square to be a drug addict- said, "When the free drugs run out, when the free sex runs out, they'll get bored and move on to something else."

Oh, that's right, Grandpa. Look at them: strumming their sitars and wearing dungarees. Whatever happened to the good old days of segregation and date rape? But I get it. You're bitter, because we fought a culture war in the sixties, and the right lost. Rick Santorum is like that Japanese soldier on the island that doesn't know the war is over, so he's still fighting against birth control and butt sex.

Plus, Republicans are now mostly a southern party, and if there's one thing southerners don't do well, it's lose a war and get over it.

But that war is, indeed, over. The ideals of the youth movement became assimilated into American society. That's way we have gays in the military now, and pre-natal yoga classes, and tofurkey. And that's why Rick Santorum will never be President, and a black guy who snorted cocaine is.

It's also why there's not going to be a repeat of what happened the last time the hippies were in the streets. Those hard-hats that you're depending on to turn against the lousy hippies? Here's what they're doing now: they're cheering them on. Because now the hard-hats are just as broke as everybody else.

These people down there, they're not the counter-culture; they're the culture. They don't want free love. They want paid employment. They don't hate capitalism. They hate what's been done to it. And they resent the Republican mantra that the market perfectly rewards the hard-working and punishes the lazy. And the poor are just jealous mooches that want a hand-out.

Yeah. 'Cause if there's one group of people who hate hand-outs, it's Wall Street.

A typical Republican voter (some strong language)

Trying to get today's Republican to accept basic facts is like trying to get your dog to take a pill. You have to give them the truth wrapped in a piece of baloney, hold their snouts shut, and stroke their throats. And even then, just when you think they’ve swallowed it, they spit it out on the linoleum.

(YouTube video in which Bill Maher and Keith Olbermann explain the density of Republicans.)

Strong, but contextually appropriate language. Turn down the volume or use your headphones. This one's definitely worth the time. Palin, Weiner, the Obamas and Mitt Romney are the subjects.

He's back...

Bill Maher returns...

"...cult members always attribute all of their problems to one simple explanation. Now here's an amazing statistic. In a recent poll almost ninety percent of Tea Baggers said that they thought taxes had either gone up or stayed the same under Obama. Only two percent thought they went down. But the reality is taxes have gone down-- for ninety five percent of working families, taxes went down.

"Think about that. Only two percent of the people in a "movement" about taxes named after a tax revolt, have the slightest idea what's going on... with taxes.

"So, it would be easy to just mock, except that those who fall under the control of cults aren't necessarily weirdoes, they're victims. And we shouldn't forget that these people are our relatives, our neighbors and the folks at the next table in the restaurant. Especially if that restaurant is Hooters and it's Dollar Wing Wednesday."
