On this day in 1972, Home Box Office began. The 1971 film Sometimes a Great Notion, starring Paul Newman and Henry Fonda, was transmitted that evening to 325 Service Electric subscribers in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Initially, HBO was on the air for only nine hours a day, from 3 pm until midnight. Despite decades of warnings from the motion picture industry, pay tv did not destroy broadcast "free" TV.

Among other things, today is also, appropriately enough, National Harvey Wallbanger Day, a drink composed of three parts vodka, one part Galliano, and six parts orange juice. The true origin of the drink and its name are uncertain, although the most likely story is a marketing scheme to popularize Galliano, a sweet herbal Italian liqueur.
